Up-and-coming Croydon

by Housesimple on 5th May 2016

Croydon has shaken off its unfashionable reputation to become one of Greater London's most desirable areas. Regeneration works and exciting new plans have seen house prices in this location rise by more than 5% over the past year. In particular, Croydon is gaining ground with young professionals. Tempt potential buyers to view your property by highlighting the following features of this up-and-coming area.

Commute time

Croydon’s East, West and South train stations may be located in Zone 5, but City workers won't feel it. City Thameslink trains can take as quick as 15 minutes to reach London Bridge, and 20 minutes to London Victoria. This is certainly not bad considering the average London commute time is around 74 minutes.

Booming tech scene

However, the commute may be unimportant for young urban creatives working in the tech industry. Croydon has enough tech startups to rival central London’s Silicone Roundabout. With a growth rate of 23% (compared to around 11% in the rest of the UK) Croydon is Greater London's fastest growing tech hot spot.

Quirky culture

Where startups go, trendy bars and restaurants soon follow. The imminent arrival of Boxpark Croydon this September is probably the biggest example. Here, old shipping containers will be transformed into pop-up boutiques and will house 40 new food and drink outlets. Other Croydon attractions include the arthouse David Lean Cinema, and the Michelin Guide listed Albert's Table which offers a creative twist on British classics.

Regeneration

Say goodbye to concrete blocks and say hello to new public spaces. Croydon's town centre is undergoing a £1 billion regeneration project, with works already completed in the high street areas. 10,000 new homes are set to be built over the next five years, as demand for property in the area grows. One of the biggest projects is the proposed mega mall that will open by 2020. It's predicted it will be one of Greater London's premier shopping destinations, with 1.5 million square feet of retail space, a huge cinema and a bowling alley.
