Light up your darker nights
by Housesimple on 10th October 2016
Winter’s long evenings can make everything feel a little dismal sometimes. However, there’s no easier way to banish the winter blues and brighten up those dark nights than adding some more light. Check out some of our home decorating ideas with lighting to learn how to make your home feel cosy and bright this winter.
Light a fire
Fireplaces are one of the most obvious solutions if you’re considering how to light your home for winter. A warm fireplace is often the heart of a living room, and it makes even the coldest nights seem cosy.
Of course we understand that building a fireplace isn't for everyone, so if you don’t have a hearth at all, you can easily give your room a different kind of centrepiece. A statement ceiling light fitting has the potential to liven up your living room and lend it an added dimension of sophistication and warmth. Chandeliers work well for old-fashioned charm, while modern glass designs provide an elegant and eye-catching alternative. You can also try a well-chosen floor lamp that lights up the corner of your room to give off a soft, warm glow.
Adding some seasonal glow to your garden doesn’t have to be ostentatious. Suspending large-bulb string lights across a patio can add a charming atmosphere to the area as well as give you a nice ambient light inside too.
Adding extra post lights along either side can jazz up your garden path or driveway, as well as eliminate the need for a torch. And if you do decide to deck your house with Christmas lights, try picking plain LED lights and wrapping them around trees or bushes. This allows you to leave them up all winter for a pretty pick-me-up.
Improve your mood
It can be hard to know how to choose home lighting beyond the standard fixtures, so thinking about the kind of mood you want to create is essential. White lights can make your home feel a little sterile, so try switching out a couple of bulbs for yellow-tinged ones.
Soft ambience can also be achieved by lighting your home with candles. Together with side-lights or wall sconces, candles can provide a soothing aura: try creating arrangements of them by colour or scent. Candles work great in bathrooms for a hint of luxury – for safety's sake just make sure there’s another source of light available too!
